This paper deals with what the authors term the Kestelman-Borwein-Ditor theorem (see [\textit{H. Kestelman}, J. Lond. Math. Soc. 22, 130--136 (1947; Zbl 0038.03304); \textit{D. Borwein} and \textit{S. Z. Ditor}, Can. Math. Bull. 21, 497--498 (1978; Zbl 0404.28001)]), which gives conditions on a subset~\(A\) of \(\mathbb{R}\) (or \(\mathbb{R}^n\)) under which for every sequence \((x_n)_n\) that converges to~\(0\) there is an \(a\in A\) (or many~\(a\)) such that \(a+x_n\in A\) for all/almost all/infinitely many~\(n\). The authors use the umbrella term \textit{shift-compact} for these and related properties. The paper deals with generalizations of the KBD theorem to group actions on Baire spaces and with effective versions of the original theorem. The results are too many to summarise here effectively but the author's introduction will give the reader a good overview of what went before and details of what the paper has to offer.
