Jones' set function \(\mathcal{T}: \mathcal{P}(X) \to \mathcal{P}(X)\) was introduced by \textit{F. B. Jones} [Am. J. Math. 70, 403--413 (1948; Zbl 0035.10904)] in 1948 as \(\mathcal{T}(A) = X \backslash \{x \in X \ | \ \exists W \in \mathcal{C}(X) \text{ such that } x \in \text{Int}_X(W) \subseteq W \subseteq X \backslash A\}\) for each \(A \in \mathcal{P}(X)\). Here \(X\) is a compact metric space and \(\mathcal{C}(A)\) is the family of subcontinua of \(X\). Here the authors use Jones' set function in the theory of dynamical systems. First for a given compact metric space \(X\) and a map \(f:X \to X\) they define the function \(\mathcal{T}_f: X \to 2^X\) by \(\mathcal{T}_f(x) = \mathcal{T}(\{f(x)\})\) for each \( x \in X\), and prove some of its features. It turns out that \(\mathcal{T}_f\) is upper semicontinuous. Then, the authors examine various properties of the function \(\mathcal{T}_f\) under different conditions for \(X\) and \(f\). Among other things, they study the following notions of \(\mathcal{T}_f\): mixing, orbits, minimality, transitivity, irreducibility, sensitivity, and relations among them.
