In this paper, studied is an adaptive control problem for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). To cope with the complexities and uncertainty factors present in modeling this type of control system, the developed model utilizes type-2 fuzzy sets along with an adaptive robust controller used to control oxygen excess ratio of the PEMFC air supply. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the adaptive robust controller, the adaptive updating laws, and the robust compensation term are constructed. It is demonstrated that the controller can guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system and the boundedness of tracking error. The optimal approximation error is derived through adjustments of the components of the rules, namely the number and parameters of the corresponding membership functions forming the condition parts of the rules. The experiments involve numeric simulations and a hardware in the loop experiment where the rule-based model come with Gaussian membership functions. Comparative studies including results PID controller and type-2 fuzzy controller are reported as well.
