In this paper, the author studies the cooperations \(\mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle_* \mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle\) for \(\mathrm{BP}\langle 2 \rangle\), the second truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum at the prime \(2\). By change of rings, the \(E_2\)-page of the relevant Adams spectral sequence is isomorphic to the cohomology of \((A//E(2))_*\), the subalgebra \(\mathbb{F}_2 [\zeta_1^2, \zeta_2^2 , \zeta^2_3, \zeta_4, \ldots]\) of the mod \(2\) Steenrod algebra, as a comodule over \(E(2)_*:=\Lambda (\zeta_1, \zeta_2, \zeta_3)\) (or, by duality, as a module over \(E(2):=\Lambda(Q_0, Q_1, Q_2)\), for \(Q_i\) the Milnor primitives). The main theoretical result shows that this cohomology splits as a \(\mathbb{F}_2 [v_0, v_1, v_2]\)-module as \(\mathcal{C} \oplus V\), where \(\mathcal{C}\) is \(v_2\)-torsion-free and is concentrated in even \((t-s)\) degree and \(V\) is annihilated by \(v_0\), \(v_1\), \(v_2\). Hence the Adams spectral sequence collapses, from which the author deduces results for \(\mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle_* \mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle\) and for the spectrum \(\mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle \wedge \mathrm{BP} \langle 2 \rangle\). The proof relies on the analysis of \(\begin{pmatrix}A//E(2)\end{pmatrix}_*\) as a \(\Lambda(Q_0, Q_1, Q_2)\)-module, exploiting Margolis homology. The author shows that this module splits as \(S \oplus Q\), where \(S\) is free. The cohomology of \(Q\) is analysed by using the \(v_2\)-Bockstein spectral sequence, which is shown to collapse at \(E_1\). The second part of the paper develops techniques for calculating the \(E(2)\)-cohomology of \((A//E(2))_*\), based upon the splitting of \(E(2)\)-modules: \[ (A//E(2))_* \cong \bigoplus_{j \geq 0} \Sigma^{2j} \underline{\mathrm{bu}}_{\lfloor j/2 \rfloor } \] as (generalized) Brown-Gitler modules. (These Brown-Gitler modules are defined using the weight filtration of the subalgebras \((A//E(i))_*\), for \(i \in \mathbb{N}\); the \(\underline{\mathrm{bu}}_*\) correspond to \(i=1\).) This reduces to studying the cohomology of the Brown-Gitler modules, which is analysed by using Mahowald-type exact sequences that yield an inductive approach.
