An \(L^2\) Fourier restriction argument of \textit{J.-G. Bak} and \textit{A. Seeger} [Math. Res. Lett. 18, No. 4, 767--781 (2011; Zbl 1271.42014)] is transferred to the abstract setting of locally compact abelian groups. This is used to prove new restriction estimates for varieties lying in modules over local fields or rings of integers \(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}\). Many concrete examples are given as well as a comparison of them. At the end of the paper, two appendices are given: one on the basics of Fourier analysis on locally compact abelian groups and the other on the basics of \(p\)-adic analysis.
