A group \(\Gamma\) is called Jordan if there exists a constant \(C\) such that if \(G\) is a finite subgroup of \(\Gamma\) then \(G\) has a normal abelian subgroup of index at most \(C\). Historically Jordan proved that the linear group \(\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})\) is Jordan. The group of automorphisms of a compact Kähler variety is Jordan, see [\textit{S. Meng} and \textit{D.-Q. Zhang}, Am. J. Math. 140, No. 4, 1133--1145 (2018; Zbl 1428.14023); \textit{J. H. Kim}, Commun. Contemp. Math. 20, No. 3, Article ID 1750024, 9 p. (2018; Zbl 1400.14108)]. In this paper the authors proved that the automorphism group of a primary Kodaira surface or an Inoue surface is Jordan. Primary Kodaira surfaces and Inoue surfaces are particular types of non Kähler compact complex surfaces. They can be both constructed as quotients of solvable complex Lie groups. The proof of this article is based on the following auxiliary result which is interesting in its own. If \(X\) is an Inoue surface and \(G\) is a finite group of automorphisms, then the action of \(G\) is free and \(X/G\) is still an Inoue surface. Similarly if \(X\) is a primary Kodaira surface and \(G\) is a finite group of automorphisms with trivial action on cohomology, then the action of \(G\) is free and \(X/G\) is still a Kodaira surface.
