The essential starting point of this work is the situation in which there are two different interpolators \(\Phi\) and \(\Psi\) acting on the same interpolation couple of Banach spaces. Instead of assuming any compatibility conditions, the authors exploit the intrinsic symmetry between \((\Phi,\Psi)\) and \((\Psi,\Phi)\). This flexibility allows them to study interpolation in a quite general setting. The derivation of \((\Psi,\Phi)\), denoted \(\Omega_{\Psi,\Phi}\), is defined as the composition of \(\Psi\) with a suitable one-sided inverse for \(\Phi\); it is a quasilinear map. The main result is that if \(\tau\) is any linear operator acting on the given couple, then the commutator \([\tau,\Omega_{\Psi,\Phi}]\) is bounded. The corresponding result for two couples is then presented. Many previous commutator theorems, and some new ones, are shown to follow from this.
