The notion of C-monoid was introduced by [\textit{F. Halter-Koch}, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 241, 71--98 (2005; Zbl 1093.13016)] as a common generalization of various types of distinguished auxiliary monoids studied in factorization theory. Precisely, a C-monoid \(H\) is a submonoid of a factorial monoid \(F\), such that (a) the set of the invertible elements of \(H\) coincides with the restriction to \(H\) of the set of the invertible elements of \(F\) and (b) the reduced class semigroup is finite. It is well-known that a C-monoid is Mori (i.e., \(v\)-Noetherian) and is completely integrally closed if and only if its reduced class semigroup is a group and if this holds, then the C-monoid is a Krull monoid and the reduced class semigroup coincides with the usual class group of Krull monoids. One of the main results of the present paper states that a C-monoid is seminormal if and only if its reduced class semigroup is a union of groups. Based on this cha\-racte\-rization the authors establish a criterion, in terms of the class semigroup, when seminormal C-monoids are half-factorial.
