This book focuses on one of the most intriguing branches of medicine: hematology. Blood is complicated as a fluid and many rheological models have been proposed for its study. These models considered as a fluid dynamics tool, are used to simulate processes normally occurring in flowing blood and to predict and prevent the effects of some dysfunctions. Due to its interdisciplinary character this book is addressed to a large audience. The book is mainly intended for mathematicians, specialists in fluid dynamics interested in medical applications but it is also useful for clinicians for new improving treatments. The book is divided in eight chapters as follow: Hemorheology and hemodynamics, Blood coagulation, Blood filtration in kidneys, Extracorpoeral blood ultrafiltration, Extracorporeal blood oxygenation, Blood and heat transfer, Thermal ablative procedures in the treatment of heart arrhythmia, Blood and cancer. All chapters follow the scheme: historical background, physiological basis, mathematical modelling -- with a lot of footnotes. It is important to point out that some parts require no specific mathematics. This book is a very valuable addition to mathematics, medical, biology, and bioengeneering libraries.
