Let \(\mathcal{M}\) be a monoidal model category. Comparing to non-commutative case, it is much more difficult to find a suitable monoid axiom which guarantees that commutative monoids in \(\mathcal{M}\) inherit a model structure. The author overcomes this difficulty and introduce the commutative monoid axiom in this paper. To do this, the authors work with \(E_{\infty}\)-algebras. The author also provides numerous examples of model categories satisfying the axiom in the last section of the paper. Additionally, he gives results regarding functoriality of the passage from \(R\) to commutative \(R\)-algebras, regarding rectification between Com and \(E_{\infty}\), regarding the interplay between the strong commutative monoid axiom and Bousfield localization, and regarding left properness for the category of commutative monoids.
