The paper deals with a family of function spaces, including Gelfand-Shilov spaces, and their duals. Different characterizations of these spaces are provided. More precisely, for \(s>0\) let us consider the Gelfand-Shilov space \({\mathcal S}_s({\mathbb R}^d)\) (resp. \(\Sigma_s({\mathbb R}^d)\)) of all smooth functions \(f\) on \({\mathbb R}^d\) such that \[ \sup_x|x^\beta D^\alpha f(x)|=O( h^{|\alpha + \beta |!}(\alpha ! \beta !)^s) \] for some (for every) \(h>0\). Is is well known that \({\mathcal S}_s({\mathbb R}^d)\) (resp. \(\Sigma_s({\mathbb R}^d)\)) is invariant under the Fourier transform, continuous and densely contained in \({\mathcal S}({\mathbb R}^d)\), and nontrivial iff \(s\geq 1/2\) (resp. \(s>1/2\)). Gelfand-Shilov spaces admit alternative descriptions in terms of series expansions of the Hermite functions, with estimates of the iterates of the harmonic oscillator or by means of their images under the Bargmann transform. Looking at this alternative descriptions, the author introduces several families of spaces. For instance, Pilipović proved that \({\mathcal S}_s({\mathbb R}^d)\) (resp. \(\Sigma_s({\mathbb R}^d)\)) is the set of all smooth functions on \({\mathbb R}^d\) such that \[ ||H^Nf||_\infty=O( h^N(N!)^{2s}) \] for some (for every) \(h>0\) [\textit{S. Pilipović}, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 17, 477--484 (1986; Zbl 0604.46042); Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VII. Ser., B 2, No.~2, 235--251 (1988; Zbl 0657.46030)]. Now, it is possible to consider smooth functions satisfying the estimate above for \(s<1/2\) (or for \(s\leq 1/2\)). In the same way, \(f \in {\mathcal S}_s({\mathbb R}^d)\) (resp. \( f \in \Sigma_s({\mathbb R}^d)\)) iff \(f \in L^2({\mathbb R}^N)\) and the coefficients \((c_\alpha)_\alpha\) in its Hermite series expansion satisfy \[ |c_\alpha|=O( e^{r |\alpha |^{1/2s}}) \] for some (or every) \(r>0\). Here again, one can consider Hermite expansions with coefficients as above even for \(s<1/2\) (resp. \(s\leq 1/2\)) or for some other type of bounds. The author also introduces spaces of smooth functions as counterimages of certain spaces of entire functions under the Bargmann transform. This is motivated by the characterization of Gelfand-Shilov spaces by means of their images under the Bargmann transform. The relation between the different spaces (and their duals) introduced in the paper is established, thus providing descriptions of the same objects either by controlling the growth of the coefficients in the Hermite expansions, the iterates of the harmonic oscillator and their images under the Bargmann transform.
