The authors consider the second order differential expression \(l[y](x)\) which is the Jacobi differential expression with nonclassical parameters \(a=b=-1\). The main part of the paper is to construct a self-adjoint operator, generated by \(l[.]\) in a certain Sobolev space that has the Jacobi polynomials \(\{P_{n}^{(-1,-1)}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}\) as eigenfunctions. The tools for this construction are the Glazman-Krein-Naimark theory (see \textit{M. A. Naimark}'s book [Linear differential operators. Part II: Linear differential operators in Hilbert space. New York: Frederick Ungar Publishing Co. (1968; Zbl 0227.34020)]) as well as the general left-definite operator theory developed by \textit{L. L. Littlejohn} and \textit{R. Wellman} [J. Differ. Equations 181, No. 2, 280--339 (2002; Zbl 1008.47029)].
