A Carleman-type approximation theorem is proved for a subset of the so-called slice regular functions. If \(\mathbb{H}\) denotes the field of quaternions with the usual norm and \(\mathbb{B}_R= \{q\in\mathbb{H}:\| q\|< R\}\), \textit{G. Gentili} and \textit{D. C. Struppa} [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 342, No. 10, 741--744 (2006; Zbl 1105.30037)] note that a function \(f\) from \(\mathbb{B}_R\) to \(\mathbb{H}\) is left slice regular on \(\mathbb{B}_R\) if and only if it has a series representation of the form \(f(q)=\sum^\infty_{n=0} q^n a_n\), \(a_n\in\mathbb{H}\), uniformly convergent on \(\mathbb{B}_R\). A function \(h\) from \(\mathbb{H}\) to \(\mathbb{H}\) is called ``entire'' if \(h\) has a series representation like \(f\) above converging for any \(R> 0\). The main result of the paper follows: If \(F\) is a continuous function on \(\mathbb{R}\) into \(\mathbb{H}\) and \(\varepsilon\) is a continuous function on \(\mathbb{R}\) into \((0,+\infty)\), then there exists an ``entire'' function \(G\) from \(\mathbb{H}\) into \(\mathbb{H}\) such that \(\| F(x)- G(x)\|< \varepsilon(x)\) for all \(x\) in \(\mathbb{R}\). A second result provides a Carleman-type simultaneous approximation of a quaternion-valued function and its derivative.
