Let \(G_n = \mathrm{GL}_n(F)\) and \(P_n\) be its mirabolic subgroup, where \(F\) denotes a non-Archimedean local field. The goal of this paper is to apply the results from \textit{N. Matringe} [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 350, No. 17--18, 797--800 (2012; Zbl 1253.22012)] to study the \(L \cap P_n\)-distinguished representations of \(G_n\), where \(L\) is a maximal Levi subgroup. This is then used to study the \(L\)-distinguished representations of \(G_n\). The core arguments are largely based on the Bernstein-Zelevinsky classification of the representations of \(G_n\). Some of the main results are summarized as follows. (1) The only \(L\) that can distinguish a generic \(G_n\)-representation are of the form \(G_i \times G_j\) with \(|i - j| \leq 1\). (2) For even \(n\), some multiplicity-one technique can be employed to establish the local functional equation of the exterior-square \(L\)-function of all generic representations of \(G_n\), by purely local means. (3) For even \(n=2m\), a relation between \(G_m \times G_m\)-distinguishedness and the existence of Shalika models is established, which can also be obtained by the unfolding principle or by \(\theta\)-lifting. (4) The relation between the existence of Shalika models versus the Zelevinsky classification of discrete series.
