Let \(G\) be a connected reductive algebraic group over the field of complex numbers. A normal algebraic variety endowed with an action of \(G\) is called spherical if admits a dense orbit for a Borel subgroup of \(G\). A vector space with a linear action of \(G\) which makes it a spherical variety is called a multiplicity-free space. The classification of multiplicity-free spaces is well-known. Here the author provides the combinatorial data, called spherical system, associated with every indecomposable multiplicity-free space. Further, he gives a quite explicit combinatorial characterization of the smoothness of a spherical variety based on the list of the spherical systems of the indecomposable multiplicity-free spaces.
