Let \(X, Y \subset \mathbb{C}\) be bounded Jordan domains of the same topological type and let \(\mathcal{M}_2(X, Y)\) denote the space of monotone mappings \(g: \overline{X}\overset{\text{onto}}{\longrightarrow} \overline{Y}\) of finite Dirichlet energy. It is known that, within the class \(\mathcal{M}_2(X, Y)\), there exists a map with smallest energy; denote it by \(h\). The authors prove that the map \(h: \mathcal{O}\to\mathbb{C}\), restricted to any subdomain \(\mathcal{O}\subset X\), is harmonic if and only if it is injective.
