Using the stochastic Loewner evolution [\textit{O. Schramm}, Isr. J. Math. 118, 221--288 (2000; Zbl 0968.60093)] the author proves convergence results for variants of Smirnov's fermionic observable in the critical planar Ising model in the presence of free boundary conditions.
