\textit{S. Fu} and the reviewer [J. Funct. Anal. 159, No. 2, 629--641 (1998; Zbl 0959.32042)] proved that on bounded convex domains in \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\), the following characterization of compactness in the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann problem holds: the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann operator \(N_{q}\) on \((0,q)\)-forms is compact if and only if the boundary of the domain does not contain an analytic variety of dimension \(q\) (equivalently: an affine variety of dimension \(q\)). In this important paper the author, motivated by this result, introduces a new class of pseudoconvex domains in \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\), \emph{domains with bounded intrinsic geometry}, that contains the convex domains and for which the above characterization still holds. As the name suggests, these domains are defined via intrinsic geometric conditions. In particular, there should exist a complete Kähler metric with certain properties. As it turns out, when such a metric exists, the Bergman metric will actually have the required properties. By virtue of the intrinsic definition, this class of domains is invariant under biholomorphisms; it contains (1) strongly pseudoconvex domains, (2) finite-type domains in \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\), (3) convex domains and more generally \(\mathbb{C}\)-convex domains which are Kobayashi hyperbolic, (4) simply connected domains which have a complete Kähler metric with pinched negative sectional curvature, (5) homogeneous domains, and (6) the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus \(g\) with \(n\) punctures. For domains in this class with \(C^{0}\) boundaries, the author shows that the characterization of compactness in the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann problem stated above does indeed still hold. Moreover, he proves that, on this class, the Bergman metric is equivalent to the Kobayashi metric. Finally, certain local estimates for the pluricomplex Green function in terms of the Bergman metric are established.
