The authors consider approximations using wavelets of generalized Hölder continuous functions, that is functions \(f\in H^{(\varphi)}[0,1)\) and \(f\in H_\alpha^{(\chi)}[0,1)\) defined, respectively, by the requirement that \(|f(x)-f(x+t)|= O(\varphi(|t|))\) for \(x, x+t,t\in [0,1)\) where \(\varphi\) is a non-negative, non-decreasing function such that \(\lim_{t\to 0+}\varphi(t)=0\) and in the latter case by taking \(\varphi(t)= \frac {t^\alpha}{\chi(\frac 1t)}\) where \(0<\alpha \leq 1\) and \(\chi\) is positive and non-decreasing on \((1,\infty)\). The wavelets in question are constructed using dilations and translations of Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kind. Error estimates for the approximations are given in terms of \(L^2\)-norms involving dilated and translated versions of the weight functions \(\frac 1{\sqrt{1-t^2}}\) and \(\sqrt{1-t^2}\) associated with the Chebyshev polynomials. The authors then show how one can use the Chebyshev wavelets to numerically solve Abel integral equations of the first and second kind, i.e., \(\int_0^x \frac {y(t)}{\sqrt{x-t}}\, dt = f(x) \) and \(y(x)= \int_0^x \frac {y(t)}{\sqrt{x-t}}\, dt + f(x)\). Two examples for which the exact solution is known are considered and the results show that in these cases the best numerical results are obtained with the Chebyshev wavelets of second kind.
