The totally geodesic area set of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold \(M\) is the set of areas counted with multiplicity of all immersed, totally geodesic hyperbolic 2-orbifolds of \(M\) whose fundamental groups are maximal arithmetic Fuchsian groups. In this paper the authors show that non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds can have arbitrarily large overlapping totally geodesic area sets and prove results that quantify this overlap. This result can be compared to \textit{D. B. McReynolds} and \textit{A. W. Reid} [Math. Res. Lett. 21, No. 1, 169--185 (2014; Zbl 1301.53039)], who proved that the multiset of the isometry types of all immersed, totally geodesic hyperbolic 2-orbifolds of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold \(M\) determines the commensurability class of \(M\).
