The author considers the finite volume element approximation for the chemotaxis system in two-dimensional domain. More precisely, the paper is focusing on the analysis of two finite volume schemes (linear and nonlinear) on Voronoi mesh, including the well-posedness, conservation laws, the discrete Lyapunov inequalities, the formation of equilibrium, local stability, and the convergence rate. It is shown that the schemes preserve the conservation of mass and positivity without CFL condition. For the nonlinear scheme, the well-posedness is proved by using Brouwer's fixed point theory and the Picard iteration. The Picard iteration yields a contraction mapping for sufficiently small \(\tau\), where \(\tau\) is the time step size. To validate the smallness condition for the discrete solution tending to the equilibrium \(\gamma =\Vert u_0\Vert_{L^1}/|\Omega|\), a Lyapunov inequality is derived and an exponentially decreasing of the discrete Lyapunov functional is justified. For the error analysis, the discrete semi-group theory is applied to obtain the convergence rate \(O(\tau +h)\) in \(L^p\) norm, where \(h\) is the mesh size of the space discretization. Some numerical tests are presented to support the theoretical results. The article is interesting and contains several tools from numerical and functional analyses. It deserves to be read.
