The authors are concerned with accurate solution of the decoupled Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations using modified characteristic finite element method with different subdomain time steps for the mixed stabilized formulation of this model. In order to assure the numerical stability of the method, a mesh-dependent stabilization term is introduced. The modified characteristic finite element method is used to cope with the time term and nonlinear term in Navier-Stokes system. The Darcy equations are solved by mixed finite element method. A convergence result is proved. Two numerical experiments are carried out in order to underline the convergence performance and efficiency of the method.
