Rota-Baxter algebras and Hopf algebras are the main algebraic structures underlying the Connes-Kreimer approach to the theory of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. In this paper, the notion of a Rota-Baxter operator on cocommutative Hopf algebras is introduced. Further, two main examples of cocommutative Hopf algebras: the group algebra and the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra are considered. It was proved that Rota-Baxter operator on a Lie algebra (resp., on a group) can be uniquely extended to a Rota-Baxter operator on the universal enveloping algebra (resp., on the group algebra). Finally, for any Rota-Baxter Hopf algebra \((H, B)\), by defining a new multiplication and a new antipode on \(H\), the paper obtains a new cocommutative Hopf algebraic structure on \(H\).
