Let \(K\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\) and let \(C_{q}\) denote the cyclic group of order \(q=p^{s}\) for some \(s>0\). It is known that there are exactly \( s\) indecomposable \(KC_{q}\)-modules \(V_{0},\dots,V_{s-1}\) where \(\dim V_{i}=p^{i}\) for each \(i\). Since \textit{J. A. Green}'s early work on modular representations [Ill. J. Math. 6, 607--619 (1962; Zbl 0131.26401)], papers have been written on the surprisingly complicated question of how \(V_{i}\otimes V_{j}\) decomposes into indecomposables; for recent results see for example [\textit{R. Gow} and \textit{T. J. Laffey}, J. Group Theory 9, No. 5, 659--672 (2006; Zbl 1115.20001); \textit{M. J. J. Barry}, J. Group Theory 14, No. 1, 59--82 (2011; Zbl 1238.20005); \textit{S. P. Glasby} et al., Isr. J. Math. 209, Part 1, 215--233 (2015; Zbl 1338.15050)]. The present paper deals with the case \(p=2\) which is not covered in the paper above of \textit{R. Gow} and \textit{T. J. Laffey}. The tensor product \(V\otimes V\) can be decomposed into the sum of its symmetric square \(S^{2}(V)\) and exterior square \(\Lambda ^{2}(V)\) under the action of \(\mathrm{SL}(V)\) and the author describes the full decomposition of these two subspaces as \(KC_{q}\)-modules. The author also discusses the similar (but different) decomposition for the corresponding question in which the unipotent generator \(u\) of \(C_{q}\) is replaced by a nilpotent element \(e:=u-1\).
