The authors study the interplay between left-invariant distances on Lie groups and multiplicative one-parameter groups of Lie automorphisms. If a distance~\(d\) admits such a group, say \(\langle\delta_\lambda:\lambda\in(0,\infty)\rangle\), with the property that one always has \(d(\delta_\lambda x,\delta_\lambda y)=\lambda d(x,y)\), then \(d\)~is admissible (determines the manifold topology). Conversely, there is a characterization of such groups that show the above behaviour with respect to some left-invariant distance.\par In addition admissible distances that admit at least one dilating automorphism are equivalent to distances that admit a group as above, and, conversely, there is a characterization of automorphisms that can be dilations with respect to an admissible distance.
