\textit{G. Cornell} proved in [Lect. Notes Math. 751, 82--88 (1979; Zbl 0423.12009)] that every finite abelian group occurs as a subgroup of the ideal class group of some cyclotomic field. The main result of the paper under review is that an analogous result holds taking just the maximal real subfields instead of the whole cyclotomic fields. Actually, it is shown more: the real cyclotomic fields can be chosen to be unramified at any given finite set of primes \(S\). The authors give two completely different proofs of their main theorem. The first one relies on lifting class groups of quadratic and cubic extensions (using results of Yamamoto, Weinberger and Uchida); the second proof follows a cohomological approach.
