The final part of this paper concerns the computation of the distribution of certain properties among the some 11.8 million groups of order at most 1000, computed not by hand of course. The bulk of this paper develops some Lie techniques, which are then used in this computation. Suppose $G$ is a finite group with lower central series $\{\Gamma_i\}$ and upper central series $\{Z_j\}$. Then $[\Gamma_i, Z_j]\leq Z_{j-I}$ and we may impose a Lie ring structure on the direct sum $\Gamma$ of the lower central factors of $G$ and a $\Gamma$-module structure on the direct sum of the upper central factors of $G$. This is not new of course, but the author develops a wide-ranging extension of this involving more general central series.
