The paper deals with the commutation properties of convolution and differential operators. A convolution operator \(K\) acting as \[ (K u)(x) = \int_{-1}^1 k(x-y) u(y)\,\mathrm{d}y \] with the integral kernel \(k\) is considered. The commutation with certain differential operators of the second order \(L\) is investigated. This allows one to deduce the spectral properties of the integral operator \(K\), especially the asymptotics of its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The paper extends results by \textit{J. A. Morrison} [Notices Am. Math. Soc. 9, 119 (1962)]. The paper is followed by a second paper by the same authors [Result. Math. 76, No. 3, Paper No. 111, 26 p. (2021; Zbl 1475.45022)] that studies sesquicommutation.
