In this note the author obtains a partial regularity result for the optimal transport map between continuous densities \(0<c\le\rho_0,\rho_1\le C\) with cost the squared Euclidean distance. The result is not new (see [\textit{A. Figalli} and \textit{Y.-H. Kim}, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 28, No. 2, 559--565 (2010; Zbl 1193.35087)]), but the interest lies in the proof which is based on an \(\varepsilon\)-regularity theorem and continues the investigation of the variational approach to the regularity theory for optimal transport maps started in [\textit{M. Goldman} and \textit{F. Otto}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 53, No. 5, 1209--1233 (2020; Zbl 1465.35263)].
