A module \(G\) has the cancellaton property if whenever modules \(H\) and \(K\) satisfy \(G\oplus K\cong G\oplus H\), then \(H\cong K\). The problem of characterising classes of modules with the cancellation property has a long history in the context of abelian groups. In particular, necessary or sufficient conditions for torsion-free abelian groups of finite rank to enjoy the cancellation property have been widely studied. The lemma of Fuchs referred to in the title states that if \(G\) is a finite rank torsion-free abelian group with endomorphism ring \(R\) and \(G\) has the cancellation property, then for every integer \(n\), every unit in \(R/nR\) lifts to a unit in \(R\). In this paper, the author proves a similar result for two classes of mixed groups, namely quotient divisible groups with no free direct summands and self-small groups of finite torsion-free rank.
