The author describes his investigations in which some results in the theory of abelian groups turned out to be inspiring for him in the study of topological objects. Such results from the theory of abelian groups are the Chase lemma for homomorphisms from direct products to direct sums, Specker's theorem, some results from the theory of algebraically compact groups and Reid classes. Their analogues are used in the study of fundamental groups, the Peano continuum, singular homology, the Hawaiian earring etc.
