The authors propose a novel model of the primary visual cortex (V1) based on orientation, frequency, and phase selective behavior of simple V1 cells. Starting from the first-level mechanisms of visual perception, i.e. the receptive profiles, V1 is viewed as a fiber bundle over the two-dimensional retinal plane with orientation, frequency, and phase as intrinsic variables. Thus, they succeed to naturally use rotated, frequency modulated, and phase shifted Gabor function that induce the model geometry as well as the associated horizontal connectivity modeling of the neural connectivity patterns in V1. Moreover, the authors provide an algorithm for image enhancement using the model framework that exploits besides orientation, frequency and phase information from two-dimensional input image. Experimental results are given as well.
