The authors study a particular polynomial Hamiltonian system which is generated by a perturbation of the classical Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian: \(H=(p_x^2+p_y^2+x^2+y^2)/2+x^2y-y^3/3.\) Three features of its associated differential equation are considered: the number of finite and infinite critical points, its integrability in the sense of Liouville-Arnold, and the existence of some periodic orbits. The authors prove that for a small enough perturbation the system has four finite critical points and it has no infinite critical points in its Poincaré compactification. The proof of the existence of two families of periodic orbits is done by using averaging theory of second order. The integrability is studied following the classical Poincaré's approach, namely by studying the multipliers of the periodic orbits.
