Representations of compact Lie groups of low cohomogeneity (Q2042167)

Representations of compact Lie groups according to their cohomogeneity (i.e. codimension of a principal orbit, which is the orbit of maximal dimension) are investigated. Such irreducible representations are classified for the codimensions \(6,7,8\) -- it is proved, using various techniques, that they are either polar representations or listed in three Tables. A representation is called polar if there exists a subspace, meeting all orbits and always orthogonally. In this case the structure of orbit spaces is rather well known.
