The authors consider the FitzHugh-Nagumo transport equation with strong local interaction. They propose a new numerical treatment for such an equation where they use the particle method combined with an implicit-exiplicit (ImEx) approach for the time-integration. They investigate the asymptotic preserving (AP) property of their new proposed schemes and are able to prove it. In several numerical experiments (rotating spiral waves, heterogeneous neuron density, accuracy tests for \(\epsilon \to 0\) or \(h \to 0\)) they verify the numerical properties of their schemes. The paper is well-written and describes nicely how a scheme should be constructed to handle such a type of equations. In particular, the time-integration has to be treated in a proper way to ensure the AP property. First, a first-order ImEx scheme is proposed but is later extended to a second-order version rigorously. As mentioned before, it is combined with the particle method which is also introduced. The numerical section consider all the resonable tests and is quite sufficient.
