An alternating segment Crank-Nicolson (ASC-N) difference scheme has been constructed for solving the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with damping. The authors show that the scheme is unconditionally stable and convergent, which is validated by two numerical examples. The ASC-N scheme is more efficient than the Crank-Nicolson (C-N) scheme with increasing the number of space grids. The inherent parallelism of the scheme allows higher accuracy and efficiency for solving fractional differential equations.
