A subset \(S\) of the real interval \((0,1)\) is called a gritty set if \(S\) has no inner point, \(S\) is measurable and \(\lambda (S\cap (a,b))>0\) whenever \(0<a<b<1\); here \(\lambda\) denotes the Lebesgue measure on \((0,1)\). The main result says that \((0,1)\) contains a countable sequence of pairwise disjoint gritty sets. This result is used to construct a real-valued function \(F\) on \((0,1)\) which is continuous and strictly increasing but \(\lambda(\{x\in(a,b):F'(x)=0\}>0\) for any subinterval \((a,b)\) of \((0,1)\), and a function \(G\in L^1(0,1)\) which is unbounded on a set of positive measure in each subinterval \((a,b)\) of \((0,1)\).
