Let \(S\) be a compact oriented finite dimensional manifold and \(M\) a finite dimensional Riemannian manifold. Denote by \(\text{Imm}_f(S,M)\) the space of all free immersions \(\iota:S\to M\), and by \(\text{Diff}^+(S)\) the group of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of \(S\). The authors make a study of formally integrable complex structures on the `higher dimensional knot space' \(B_{i,f}^+(S,M)\), defined as the quotient space \(\text{Imm}_f(S,M)/\text{Diff}^+(S)\). In their main theorem they prove that if \(M\) admits a parallel \(r\)-fold vector cross product \(\chi\in \Omega^r(M,TM)\) (an \(r\)-form with properties generalizing the \(3\)-dimensional vector product) and $\dim S = r-1$, then \(B_{i,f}^+(S,M)\) is a formally Kähler manifold. This generalizes earlier results of Brylinski, LeBrun and \textit{M. Verbitsky} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 18, No. 3, 539--555 (2012; Zbl 1255.53021)] for the case that \(S\) is a codimension 2 submanifold in \(M\), and \(S=S^1\) or \(M\) is a torsion-free \(G_2\)-manifold respectively.
