Let \(G=\mathrm{PGL}_n({\mathbb R})\), and consider automorphic representations on \(G\) for \(\mathrm{PGL}_n({\mathbb Z})\). \textit{H. Iwaniec} and \textit{P. Sarnak} [in: GAFA 2000. Visions in mathematics---Towards 2000. Proceedings of a meeting, Tel Aviv, Israel, 1999. Part II. Basel: Birkhäuser. 705--741 (2000; Zbl 0996.11036)] defined the analytic conductor \(C(\pi)\) for such a representation \(\pi\). This paper considers an approximate projection function \(J_X\) on the representations \(\pi\), such that \(J_X(\pi)\gg 1\) when \(C(\pi)<X\) while \(J_X\) decreases rapidly when \(C(\pi)\mapsto \infty\). The author proves many results using \(J_X\) as the weight function. He evaluates the integration of \(\lambda_\pi(n)\overline{\lambda_\pi(m)}\) weighted by \(J_X(\pi)\) and obtains orthogonality in this case, (here \(\lambda_\pi(n)\) is the \(n\)-th Fourier coefficient). For \(f\) a continuous function of Satake parameters of \(\pi\), the author evaluates the integration of \(f\) weighted by \(J_X\) and obtains a weighted equidistribution result with respect to Sato-Tate measure. He also studies density of low lying zeros of \(L\)-functions of \(\pi\) weighted by \(J_X\). The author also find bounds for weighted sums of the second moment of the \(L\)-function \(|L(\pi, \frac12)|^2\), and of the large sieve \(\sum_{n\ll X} |\alpha(n) \lambda_\pi(n)|^2\) (where \(\alpha\) is any function). Since these are sums of positive numbers and \(J_X(\pi)\gg 1\) when \(C(\pi)<X\), the results can also be stated with the sum taken over \(C(\pi)<X\). A last result is on the density of nontempered representations with conductor \(C(\pi)<X\). The approximate projection function \(J_X(\pi)\) is defined to be the value of Bessel distribution of \(\pi\) taken at a function \(F\) which is the self-convolution of the characteristic function of a certain subset (``approximate subgroup'') of \(G\). This function previously appeared in the work of the author with \textit{P. Nelson} [``Analytic newvectors for \(\operatorname{GL}_n({\mathbb R})\)''; Preprint, \url{arXiv:1911.01880}].
