The past extropy is studied as a measure of the uncertainty in a past lifetime distribution (time elapsed after the failure of the system, inactivity time). Examples for the uniform, exponential, Pareto, and power distributions are provided. The authors emphasize that past extropy has applications in the context of information theory, reliability and survival analysis, insurance, forensic science, and other related fields where a lifetime distribution is of utmost importance. This reviewer also suggests that it can be used to study fire hazards (e.g. data until flashover) and geohazards.
