Summary: The Turaev cobracket, a loop operation introduced by \textit{V. G. Turaev} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 24, No. 6, 635--704 (1991; Zbl 0758.57011)], which measures the self-intersection of a loop on a surface, is a modification of a path operation introduced earlier by Turaev himself [\textit{V. G. Turaev}, Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 106(148), 566--588 (1978; Zbl 0384.57004)], as well as a counterpart of the Goldman bracket [\textit{W. M. Goldman}, Invent. Math. 85, 263--302 (1986; Zbl 0619.58021)]. In this survey based on the author's joint works with A. Alekseev, Y. Kuno and F. Naef, we review some algebraic aspects of the cobracket and its framed variants including their formal description, an application to the mapping class group of the surface and a relation to the (higher genus) Kashiwara-Vergne problem. In addition, we review a homological description of the cobracket after \textit{R. Hain} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 23, No. 12, 3889--3933 (2021; Zbl 1483.14015)]. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1466.57001].
