Incompressible surfaces in 3-manifolds play the role of nontrivial simple closed curves on surfaces. They can be used for decomposing the manifold into simpler pieces, and as such they are at the basis of induction arguments. Haken 3-manifolds constitute a class of 3-manifolds whose main characteristic is that they contain incompressible surfaces. Thurston proved at the beginning of the 1980s his hyperbolization theorem for Haken manifolds. The famous Virtually Haken conjecture, stated by Waldhausen in 1968 and proved by \textit{I. Agol} in [Doc. Math. 18, 1045--1087 (2013; Zbl 1286.57019)], states that any compact, irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group is Haken up to a finite cover. In the paper under review, the author proves the existence of orientable incompressible surfaces which are not parallel to a linking surface of \(M\), in finite coverings of 3-manifolds that admit a triangulation by topological ideal tetrahedra and that admit a regular negatively curved ideal structure. The work is based on Thurston's construction of hyperbolic structures on the complement of certain knots and links in the 3-sphere and it uses more recent works of \textit{M. Fujii} [Tokyo J. Math. 13, No. 2, 353--373 (1990; Zbl 0729.57005)] and \textit{S. Kojima} [Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 20, 93--112 (1992; Zbl 0802.57006)] on triangulating the interior of compact hyperbolic manifolds by hyperbolic polyhedra. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1466.57001].
