As it is known, for a given natural number \(q \geq 2\) and a sequence \((\varepsilon_k)\) with all \(\varepsilon_k\in \{0, 1, \ldots, q-1\}\), the series \[ \sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac {\varepsilon_k}{q^k} \] defines a rational number in the unit interval if and only if the sequence \((\epsilon_k)\) is periodic. In this note, the author characterises rational numbers in terms of more general expansions of the following form: \[ \sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac {\varepsilon_k}{\prod_{j=1}^kq_j}, \] where \((q_k)\) is a sequence of natural numbers with all \(q_k \geq 2\), and \((\varepsilon_k)\) is a sequence with all \(\varepsilon_k \in \{0, 1, \ldots, q_k-1\}\).
