The authors combine three methods to present a new scheme, so-called GEM scheme, for time-dependent advection-dominated PDEs. These methods are the GDM (Gradient Discretisation Method), ELLAM (Eulerian Lagrangian Localised Adjoint Method), and MMOC (Modified Method of Characteristics). The main feature of the GEM scheme is that it inherits the advantages ELLAM scheme (mass conservation) and MMOC scheme (easier computations) and avoids the disadvantages (respectively, harder tracking around the injection regions, and loss of mass). A full analysis of mass conservation properties for these three schemes is presented, and after achieving global mass balance, an adjustment yielding local volume conservation is then proposed. To show the efficiency of the GEM scheme, some numerical tests are presented and compared for all three schemes. A convergence result of the MMOC scheme is provided which can be extended to obtain the convergence of GEM scheme.
