The authors are concerned with stable and accurate solutions to strong shock problems. They already have successfully published a number of papers centered on this challenging topic. This work is based on some of them. The governing equations and the constitutive models are first reviewed. In order to implement the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, as a spatial discretization, the authors build up a scheme based on new hierarchical orthogonal basis functions. The time discretization is based on explicit strong-stability-preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta (RK) schemes. Gauss quadrature formulas are used in order to compute the surface and volume integrals in the DG equations. Robust solutions for the following test problems are carried out: 2D Taylor-Green vortex problem, 2D Gresho vortex, Sedov blast wave problem, elastic vibration of a beryllium plate and Taylor bar impact on a wall. An appendix devoted to the study of the hierarchical basis functions and another one concerning Gauss-Lobatto quadrature rules finish this highly elaborated paper.
