In this paper, the author considers the Tornheim double zeta function \[T(s,t,u):=\sum_{m,n=1}^{\infty} \frac 1{m^sn^t(m+n)^u}.\] The main results provide globally convergent series representations of the Tornheim double zeta functions and of symmetric Tornheim double zeta functions.\par As consequences of the main results, new proofs of known results on the values \(T(s,s,s)\) at non-positive integers and the location of the poles of \(T(s,s,s)\) are given. In general it is hard to determine singularities of multivariate zeta functions. For instance, if \(k\) is a negative integer, it is shown that \[\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}T(\varepsilon,\varepsilon, \varepsilon)=\frac 13\quad\text{ and } \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}T(k+\varepsilon, k+\varepsilon,k+\varepsilon)=0\] and it is given a new proof that all the poles of \(T(s,s,s)\) are simple and are located at \(s=2/3\) and \(s=1/2-k\), \(k\) a non-negative integer.
