The paper considers the limiting distribution of so-called KPZ growth models with random but not stationary initial conditions introduced by \textit{S. Chhita} et al. [Ann. Appl. Probab. 28, No. 3, 1573--1603 (2018; Zbl 1397.82040)]. The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class of stochastic growth models in dimension one are described by a stochastically growing interface parameterized by a height function. The one-point distribution of the limit is given in terms of a variational problem. The authors deduce the right tail asymptotic of the distribution function by directly studying the variational problem. In this way, this gives a rigorous proof and extends the results obtained by \textit{B. Meerson} and \textit{J. Schmidt} [J. Stat. Mech. Theory Exp. 2017, No. 10, Article ID 103207, 22 p. (2017; Zbl 1457.82111)]. The authors' method is mostly probabilistic, and does not contain the computation of a correlation kernel and its asymptotic analysis.
