In this very detailed paper, the authors study the two natural complex structures defined on the twistor space of a pseudo-Riemannian (possibly oriented) or symplectic manifold. In particular, they study when such two structures are integrable. Moreover, in the negative cases, they compute the dimension of the span of values of the associated Nijenhuis tensor. After the introduction, in the first sections a detailed study on the twistor construction as well as on the main properties of its complex structures is carried on. Then they study in detail the case of a manifold endowed with a pseudo-Riemannian structure of signature \((2p,2q)\), finding natural extension of already known results as well as new theorems. The last section is devoted to the study of the symplectic case.
