The Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality says that for a smooth complex surface of general type \(S\) one has the bound \(K^2\leq 9\chi\), where \(K\) is a canonical divisor of \(S\) and \(\chi\) is the holomorphic Euler characteristic of \(S\). This paper address the question of existence of mildly singular surfaces where such bound does not hold. Consider an elliptic surface over a field of characteristic zero equipped with a zero section \(O\) and a section \(P\) of infinite order (i.e. such that \(O\ne nP\) for all \(n\)). The authors show that there are only finitely many points where \(O\) is tangent to a multiple \(nP\) of \(P\). Then this result is used to prove that, for each non-negative integer \(g\), there exist surfaces with only one singularity, which is log-terminal, with geometric genus \(p_g=g\) (thus \(\chi=1+g\)) and with unbounded \(K^2\).
