    The paper under review is concerned with the study of the ideal structure of the (non-unital) Banach algebra of compact-by-approximable operators \(\mathfrak{A}_X = \mathcal{K}(X) / \mathcal{A}(X)\), for various Banach spaces \(X\) which lack the approximation property. While \(\mathfrak{A}_X\) is always a radical Banach algebra, the study of its ideal structure is a highly non-trivial task, as for \(\mathfrak{A}_X\) to be non-trivial \(X\) must fail the approximation property, which is a property hard to recognise. The present paper offers substantial progress in this topic building and improving upon the results established in [\textit{H.-O. Tylli} and \textit{H. Wirzenius}, J. Aust. Math. Soc. 110, No. 2, 266--288 (2021; Zbl 1478.46015)]. The main results of the paper are the following: \begin{itemize} \item[(1)] If \(X\) has cotype \(2\), \(Y\) has type \(2\), \(\mathfrak{A}_X \neq \{0\}\) and \(\mathfrak{A}_Y \neq \{0\}\) then \(\mathfrak{A}_{X \oplus Y}\) has at least two non-trivial closed ideals; \item[(2)] There are closed subspaces \(X \subseteq c_0\) and \(X \subseteq \ell_p\) for \(4 < p < \infty\) such that \(\mathfrak{A}_X\) contains a non-trivial closed ideal; \item[(3)] There is a Banach space \(Z\) such that \(\mathfrak{A}_Z\) contains an uncountable lattice of closed ideals having the reverse order structure of the power set of the natural numbers. \end{itemize}
